The group is affectionately named “Trevor’s Vision” after the little boy in the movie Pay it Forward. His vision was to simply do a few random acts of kindness and in turn maybe inspire a few people to do the same which could potentially change the world. That is exactly what we feel like we are doing, Changing the world one person at a time.
A friend of mine and I were inspired to help feed the homeless about 7 years ago when we saw a story on the local news, Channel 5, honoring a family who were feeding the homeless in Margret T Hance Park. We came down to meet the family and immediately got involved. When that family fell on hard times we picked up the ball and ran with it. I enlisted the help of some great friends who have the same vision of giving back that I do.
We started with the last Thursday of the month and through the grace of God and generous donations have grown our little charity to feed the last THREE Thursdays of the month and have a goal of making it an every Thursday event soon.
I am very encouraged and proud of the work we have done so far. The last two years we have been able to put a brand new pair of shoes and socks on each homeless person at Christmas time (about 150 pairs of shoes each year). We have given each person hygiene kits, blankets, jackets, sweatshirts along with the three hot meals monthly.
This whole experience has been very eye opening for me. Not only have I learned that most people are good natured and truly want to help others, but how genuinely good it makes us feel when we do it. God has truly wired us to love our neighbors. I have also learned that you “can’t out-give God”. Every time we set these lofty goals of purchasing 150 pairs of shoes or growing this homeless ministry to add another week, He meets us right where we are at and helps us accomplish those goals, all in His name. We truly thank you for the opportunity to serve and look forward to many more years to come. I’m excited to see what God has in store for our future.
